Abstract Glass Art

I’ve been busy!! I cannot believe it has been one year since I moved from the beautiful ranch in the Pacific Northwest to sunny Southern Utah. I’ve scaled down life and my studio is about one half the size it was in WA. While adjustments to change may be hard for some, they have always been a challenge and somewhat fun for me to conquer. Now that I am settled into my new home, I am taking the time to marvel at the beauty Southern Utah has to offer. Terra cotta desert rock, cliffs, and canyons, gorgeous flowering cactus and desert willow—just about everything you see is vibrant and inspirational.

I decided to take my glass art in a new direction, so I took some watercolor classes to see how I could incorporate more of the watery painterly look to the glass. I had an excellent instructor who also teaches design. These classes really revved me up! I learned the major design elements that I desperately needed to learn–and at my age, it is getting more and more difficult to remember what I’ve learned!

In Southern Utah, there is a Guild (SUAG) that I joined to see if any of my glass work could be accepted. Yes, indeed and on top of that, I could exhibit in an upcoming abstract art show at the Red Cliff Gallery in Southern Utah. Below is a picture of one of the pieces that I submitted which fetched a proud second place ribbon in the 2D/3D Art division. It is a single sheet of glass that has three separate firings using watered down enamels to give a painterly look. Torch pulled stringers, frit, and Murrini are added as embellishments. It is mounted to the beautiful brushed stainless frame (made by my talented son) with a standoff to give depth. Did I mention it sold the second day of the art show? I am more than humble and very grateful!
